Was the driver an attorney? perhaps cars need a kill switch that a quick jerk disables cylinders until an appropriate speed is attained.

Better get these cars off the road before more people are killed.

There was an incident with a 2005 Toyota Prius in Westchester County, NY today. Fortunately no one was seriously injured.

Agreed, OnEmpty. Is it possible a driver wouldn't think of neutral, or just turning off the key? Note, somebody said shutting the engine might make power steering stiff, so that wouldn't be the first choice. Not that I'm defending Toyota--they need to figure this issue out.

What am I missing? If the vehicle suddenly starts this acceleration on a highway, why isn't the transmission put in neutral in order to slow it down? Especially in this case where the driver had time to dial a cell phone.
